Keeping the jungle at bay was one task;another was indulging the White Man's obsession to turn every public space into a potential site for a croquet match. Like most of the country's schoolkids, Nanu River PTS students cut the grass with sharpened pieces of hoop iron - sarifs, in pidgin. After you had cut it, you had to take it away, of course.
