PNGAA
The Papua New Guinea Association of Australia, previously known as
the Retired Officers’ Association of Papua New Guinea, was formally
constituted in 1951, following a meeting of several retired and then
current serving officers in late 1950. It was eventually
incorporated under the (NSW) Associations Incorporation Act of 1984
in March 1996.
The Association owed its genesis to the concerns of retired officers
who had served in either the separate Public Services of Papua
(being then an Australian possession) and New Guinea (then a
Mandated Territory under the League of Nations) prior to the
outbreak of World War II, or the Provisional Administration of Papua
New Guinea immediately after World War II, or latterly in the
combined Public Service of Papua and New Guinea. These concerns
related to the maintenance of superannuation entitlements and
retirement benefits affecting both themselves and their dependants.
Initially this unincorporated body was an organisation representing
the specific interests of the then membership as a whole
(principally retired public servants). Its role has progressively
expanded over the years since 1951 and it now constitutes a global
network of more than 1,500 members representing the diverse
interests of all who have lived, are living, or who have an interest
in Papua New Guinea.
The Association keeps in touch with its members, their partners,
children and friends through its Journal, Una Voce, which is
published four times a year. This Journal is read with interest by
3,000 or more readers. Una Voce publishes tales of old PNG days,
current news from former colleagues who now live in all parts of
Australia and overseas, items of interest, information on PNG
reunions anywhere in Australia as well as obituaries.
The membership list, circulated annually with Una Voce, enables
members to keep in touch with each other.
Organisation and management of PNGAA's activities are undertaken on
an honorary basis by members who give much of their time in "keeping
the show on the road". With headquarters in Sydney, Australia, the
Association has a Caring Sub-Committee that maintains contact with
members who are old, ill or need assistance. There is also a
Superannuation Sub-Committee that is responsible for maintaining the
Association’s original charter as an “advocate” for the remaining
superannuated members. There are two lunches in Sydney each year, in
April and December, and similar gatherings are promoted in other
parts of Australia.
Membership of the association is open to any person who has lived in
PNG or who has a positive interest in the country. Corporate
membership is also available.
