HOW “UNA VOCE” GOT ITS NAME
Some members may be puzzled by the motto of our Association shown on
the front page of the Association’s Journal. It doesn’t sound like
Pidgin, nor Motu, nor English - in fact it is a Latin phrase. So why
do we use it? It is based on the origin and history of the
Association. Some will remember - may even have been involved in -
the very strong suspicions which existed between officers in the
pre-war and separate services of Papua and New Guinea. This feeling
was still very much alive after the war and was continued to an
extent even after we became joined as the Territory of Papua New
Guinea.
In 1952 representatives of each service got together to discuss the
Commonwealth’s intentions about superannuation for the new combined
public service and also the old superannuation systems which had
applied to each service and whose provisions were different. They
soon realised that arguing with the Commonwealth separately would
not achieve much and so joined together to speak as one - and thus
was born “Una Voce”, meaning ‘One Voice’. This was also the
beginning of our Association. Incidentally our first Journal, then a
newsletter, was a one-pager, so when you compare it with our present
Una Voce you can appreciate what has gone into its production over
the years, during which time, as far as I know, we have had only
five secretary/editors or editors.

WALK INTO PARADISE
DVD

The Committee of the PNGAA is proud to announce the release of the
DVD "WALK INTO PARADISE"; the classic 1950's feature film, directed
by Lee Robinson and starring Chips Rafferty, Francoise Christophe,
Pierre Cressoy and our own Fred Kaad OBE. (NB: Release date 20
September 2008).
This, in reality, is a
collector's edition of a unique film which showcases
fabulous scenery and an authentic sing-sing with
thousands of fantastically adorned tribesmen and women. We will most
likely never see cinematography of Carl Kayser's calibre and scope
again.
Included as "Special
Features" are -
-
"Behind the Scenes
Location Footage" filmed by Rhonda Grogan who was a member of
the film crew;
-
a filmed interview
with Fred Kaad OBE, one of our Patrons and former District
Commissioner, who was both the Administration Liaison Officer
and a supporting actor in the film;
-
a photo gallery
of wonderful black and white photos taken on location which
capture the essence of life far from the studio lots of
Hollywood and are full of humour, warmth, camaraderie and
whimsy;
-
the original
trailer - sensational and breathtaking, it is a timepiece in
itself!
The attention
to detail of the production and design has been paramount and it is
hoped that the DVD will look both classic and timeless
and will reflect the ethos of the colonial fifties when adventurers
confronted one of the most dramatic and magnificent cultures on
earth.
The Committee of the
PNGAA has agreed that surplus funds generated from the sale of the
DVD will be used to further the objects of PNGAA, specifically "to
encourage the preservation of documents and historical material
related to Papua New Guinea" (Rule 2 (c) of PNGAA's Constitution).
In this regard assistance will be primarily given to digitising the
Fryer Library's PNGAA Collection held at the University of
Queensland.
